Promoting cruise ship as 'tourist destination' on Television: the case of Italy

2019

Destination image is one of the elements that most affect tourists’ decision-making processes (Baloglu and McCleary, 1999). Since a distinctive image can differentiate a destination from its competitors, destinations usually compete also via images (Urry, 1990). In this regard, cruise tourism is no exception, since “image is what sells cruises” (Klein, 2002). Over the past 30 years this has led to significant growth in advertising activities aiming to promote the cruise ship “as the destination in itself” (Wood, 2004). Similar trends can be observed among Italian cruise lines as well. Among different types of promotional texts, the importance of the visual ones in shaping the ways tourist r…

Marked Hawkes processes for Twitter data

2022

In this paper, we propose to model retweet event sequences using a marked Hawkes process, which is a self-exciting point process where the occurrence of previous events in time increases the probability of further events. The aim is to analyse Twitter data combining temporal point processes theory and textual analysis. Since each retweet event carries a set of properties, we mark the process by different characteristics drawn from the textual analysis, finding that the tone of the description of the Twitter user is a good predictor of the number of retweets in a single cascade.

Translators vs translatresses’ strategies: ethical and ideological challenges

2011

In the last few years there has been an increasing interest in the issue of gender in translation practice especially thanks to the work of feminist critics and translators who see the act of translating as an activity which involves making use not of speciously neutral, so-called objective strategies, but rather dynamic procedures and tactics which negotiate and are negotiable, open and contingent, and which never assume feminine subjectivity to be an absolute and stable category. Drawing on such premises, this work will focus on the interrelation between identity, textuality and translation in an attempt to explore the idea that gender representation in translation practice may be shaped …

Group-Analysis and Education in Psychological Academic Training

2012

The aim of the paper is to present an integrated model of training groups (from median to large group) which can afford an useful instrument in psychologist’s academic education, decreasing the distance between theory and practice inside the university programs. The model proposed integrates methodological knowledge and relational experience using median and large groups as real contexts for training. Qualitative research methods like textual analysis can demonstrate the validity and efficacy of a group-oriented professional education. Using T-LAB, researchers can find if the group-analytic way to think psychologist’s academic education demonstrates efficacy and is coherent with the theoret…

The analysis conducted on one of Leonardo Sciascia's three theatrical tex…

“Plain Language: New perspectives and recent outcomes in European and International arena”.

2014

This EJLR issue on “Plain Language: New perspectives and recent outcomes in European and International arena” draws its plain language reform data from the United Kingdom, Italy, the European Union, Australia, Pakistan, and the international context. The focus of investigation is centrally on the analysis of discourse (very broadly construed to include lexico-grammatical analyses as well as generic and textual analyses) but with the analyses cited in particular contexts (legal, national, and international). These issues are examined in a more detailed form in the contributions to this volume, which focus on the legal, linguistic, and cultural aspects of plain language discourse in different…
